Headquartered in the historic Earle-Wightman House museum and library, the Society has provided tourists, students, scholars, and historians with historic exhibits, lectures, maps, photographs, artifacts, and historical and genealogical documents for more than 40 years. In recognition of our contribution, the museum has been designated an historic site on the Revolutionary War Heritage Trail.

The Society's innovative exhibits and well-received outreach and conservation programs are supplemented by the eagerly-anticipated quarterly publication of the Freeholder, "The History Magazine of the Town of Oyster Bay." Comprised primarily of original articles of historical research and scholarship, the Freeholder is sent at no charge to members of the Oyster Bay Historical Society as a benefit of membership.

A recent issue of the Freeholder included "The Early Settlement of Oyster Bay" by Town Historian John E. Hammond. Drawing on original Dutch and English sources, Mr. Hammond's research "will necessitate the rewriting of every book on Long Island history," according to OBHS Director Kuehhas. That and other popular back issues of the Freeholder, along with maps and books, like John Hammond's new Oyster Bay: Images of America, are available for online purchase in our bookstore.
