The Oyster Bay Historical Society operates a museum, consisting of exhibition rooms interpreted to the periods 1740 and 1830, and a comprehensive research library organizing materials about the history of the Town of Oyster Bay.

The museum and research library are housed in the historic Earle-Wightman House, the Society's headquarters at 20 Summit Street.

The Society is currently raising funds to add a new building, The Angela P. Koenig Research and Collections Center, behind its headquarters to provide safe, archival storage for its growing collection and offices for its growing staff. Please read about the Center and make a contribution if you can.

The Museum's exhibition rooms have recently been renovated and refurbished to reflect two separate periods in the house's history:

You can see and learn how an 18th century tradesman might have lived and worked with his wife and children in a one-room house. (Photo on our Kid's Tour page.)
You can look in as Reverend Earle entertains his 19th century guests in the parlor.

This is a wonderful opportunity to touch and learn from a period hands-on experience. The experience is enhanced if you have the time to stroll through the authentic 18th century garden newly restored on the grounds of the Earle-Wightman house.

The Research Library of over 750 volumes, 700 manuscripts, 1000 photographs, maps, documents and vertical files contains a fine genealogy collection. It is rich in materials relating to the military, maritime, and religious history of Oyster Bay. (You can sample a few of the photographs in our Photo Gallery; some of the documents are in our Historic Documents section.)

Instructive, interactive hands-on educational programs are available for school or group tours by prior appointment.
